Most problems that arise during a service are due to poor communication. What your students are saying may not be what the client is hearing, and vice-versa.

 To ensure that your future professionals are on the same page with their clients, they need to confirm. This could be the most important part of the consultation.

There are two resources available when students are confirming with their clients:
look book and dialogue 4

A look book is great for showing examples to clarify exactly what the client means and wants. For example:

Included in your students' look books should be a variety of cuts, colors, styles, makeup applications, etc. Most importantly, your students should make sure they can confidently create all of the looks they choose to include.

Future professionals should always dialogue a confirmation with their clients by repeating back what they heard the client say. Here are a few examples:

By utilizing a look book and dialoguing what they heard the client say, your future professionals will have better communication skillsa happier client and possibly a bigger tip!

Make a habit of conscious listening.

Are you aware that we only remember 25% of what we hear? This means in a 10 minute conversation we only remember what was said for two and a half minutes.  

We can all benefit from improving our listening skills. It is a skill our students need to know to be successful. Think about all the noise on the clinic floor from the blow dryers, to the conversations, the music, the telephone ringing, to the water in the shampoo bowls. We need to teach our students to drown out these sounds and focus all of their attention on the guest in their chair. 

This sounds simple, right? Yet, it is difficult for us to do.

To be successful in this industry, the focus must be on the client. When servicing our clients, students shouldn't be talking to other teammates, gossiping, or paying attention to other guests.

Listening to their problems, not telling them theirs. Getting down on eye level during a consultation to really focus and listen to what the guest is saying. 

We need our students to get in the habit of conscious listening. It will make the guest feel special and want to spend time at your school again, plus it will set your students up for success.

People like to spend time with and patronize others who make them feel good. Listening is the simplest way to ensure that your guests are with someone they want to be with. It's how they connect and understand.

Increase your net retail average by 233%

What if I told you that your net retail average could increase by 233%?

We recently received the numbers from a multi-location school that implemented the Prosper U Business Training Program a little over two months ago. Their net retail average increase was phenomenal (scroll down to see the numbers)!

Are you in the business of retailing?

Did you know retail sales are the most profitable part of a salon or spa's businessSalon and Spa owners like to hire stylists and estheticians who know how to sell retail.

This starts with you; by creating a "Culture of Retail" on your clinic floor. Your school essentially has two parts: The front of house and the back of houseBoth are equally important to selling retail products.

The front of house is your retail store. It should look like you are in the business of selling products by: 
        - Designing displays that are inviting and attractive. 
        - Offering lots of products for sale. 
        - Placing your best-selling products at eye-level, for maximum impact. 
        - Making sure that every shelf and item is dust-free and clean
        - Creating multiple purchasing opportunities in several locations.
        - Having special retail promotions.
        - Developing seasonal displays.
        - Merchandising your products in fun and unique ways.

Your front of house can't be an afterthought - it has to be a major focus.

The back of house is all about your Future Professionals and Learning Leaders. It's where they should talk about the products that are being used. The conversation of the products should start at the consultation and continue all the way through to the end of the service. 


Teach your students not to be timid or shy, 
but professional. It's not about selling the products but about helping the guest solve their problems. You can sell anything to anybody if you make them look good and feel good.

To create a culture of retailing, it is up to your team to make sure your students are talking about the products in the back of house

Bottom line, great product displays plus confident students who know what products are right for your guests equals guests who eagerly buy retail. To create a "Culture of Retail" and be in the business of retailing every element in your student salon and spa must be geared to retail opportunities.
